CEMPLAS – SWANSGATE
CEMPLAS – New life for Swansgate
One of the recent largest public sector car park structural car park refurbishments is being carried out in 2020 by longstanding CRA member Cemplas Waterproofing & Concrete Repairs.
The multi-£m refurbishment project at Swansgate MSCP – comprising a complex package of corrosion management works – has entailed a phased closure of the 956-space multi-storey car park in the heart of the market town of Wellingborough, Northamptonshire.
The redevelopment works – which commenced in March 2020 and are scheduled to take approximately ten months – are being carried out across the entire car park and are being phased to allow certain levels to remain open and accessible to customers visiting the Swansgate shopping centre during the works.
Built in the 1970’s, the 5-level RC multi-storey car park has suffered from serious reinforcement corrosion over an extended period of time as a result of poor maintenance. The reinforcement corrosion throughout ALL decks of the car park had been propagated through higher than normal levels of chlorides (de-icing salts) culminating in the need for a complex corrosion management strategy.
Through further investigation and half-cell contour-mapping in conjunction with our corrosion management designers, Cemplas have designed and are delivering a diverse suite of corrosion management solutions.
The complex scope of works has to date included some 150m3 of concrete repair utilising Sika’s Monotop concrete repair mortars, a complex corrosion management design and installation, 24,000m2 of Sika car park deck re-waterproofing to ALL levels, movement joint replacement, stairwell refurbishment and 30,000m2 of Sikagard anti-carbonation coatings to all soffits, columns, beams & walls.
